摘要

The age of networked research and networked data analysis is upon us. Wired Magazine has told us so in their July 2008 issue whose has a cover that proclaims, "The End of Science. The quest for knowledge used to begin with grand theories. Now it begins with massive amounts of data. Welcome to the Petabyte Age." Computing technology is sufficiently complex at this point to allow for broad-scope textual analysis of data across a large body of information. However, capability of these research techniques does not necessarily mean widespread availability of these processes or, in a given research institution, the permission to perform such techniques of data analysis carte blanche. In this column, let's explore the common definitions of text mining, why these processes are becoming more of a necessity for today's researcher, and what research institutions should begin to do in order to ensure their researchers have the capability to take advantage of these advances in computing technology.
