摘要

The politics of information: Algorithmic ethics and big data(bases) in libraries Dr. Safiya Umoja Noble, Assistant Professor in the Department of Information Studies in the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies at UCLA, began the conference with a sobering review of how links that are returned to us in search engine results are anything but fair, accurate, and unbiased. In spite of most users' faith in search engines such as Google, there are copious examples of search results that reflect the values of our culture and of the programmers who write the algorithms. Users see Google as a public good, mistakenly assuming that because algorithms are a mathematical language, they can somehow remain unaffected by the human beings who create them. But technology is as much a social construct as any other invention of human beings, such as race or gender.
