摘要

It is well-known that historical artifacts and works of art deterioratenbecause of physical and chemical interactions with the surround-ning environment. These processes can be thermodynamically andnkinetically complex and can lead to discoloration, structural weak-nening, corrosion, and other alterations that, in the absence of inter-nvention to stop or slow degradation, may result in a myriad ofnnegative consequences, ranging from the incorrect “reading” of anwork of art to its complete loss. It follows that detailed knowledgenof the composition and structure of the materials used by artists, toninclude the behavioral properties of these materials, must be a fun-ndamental component of successful and durable conservation andnrestoration methods.
