To be or not be... an accountant?

To some, the word 'accountant' has been dreaded at parties. Combined with the word 'tax'you are sure to either: (ⅰ) generate the most obscure questions from those that choose to talk to you or (ⅱ) trigger a swift exit by those that have previously been enraptured by your conversation. However, to the Finance Bill Standing Committee the role of the accountant was clearly an issue of key significance. The topic of discussion was the managed service company provisions, which seek to split those people who are in business on their own account'(and, therefore/quite rightly'forming companies and benefiting from the lower rates of corporation tax and the absence of national insurance contributions on dividends) from those who are merely undertaking 'tax motivated incorporation' (using a company as a vehicle to get their 'labour income' taxed more leniently), which the government believes is costing it £350m per annum.
