THE BIG PICTURE

For over 30 years, authoritative pronouncements have recommended thatthe annual reports of large companies should aim to satisfy the information needs of a range of stakeholder groups. These documents seem to assume that the annual report is the only source of information available to each group. Part of the reason for this is that very little is known about the information sources and communication channels used by stakeholder groups other than equity investors and analysts. This view has recently been expressed by Tomorrow's Company, The Future of Corporate Reporting' (2007). To address this gap in our knowledge, we have recently completed a study that investigates the extent to which a range of information sources were used and a range of communication channels were accessed by nine important stakeholder groups.
