Dubai has not been unaffected by the credit crunch. While rumours of hordes of Westerners fleeing back home, abandoning their cars at the airport, are wildly exaggerated, there have been job losses in sectors such as construction and property.rnAs local business tightens its belt, some Dubai-based expatriate friends have been forced to takernmassive pay cuts, in the region of 10%-40%.rnHowever, the picture is not wholly bleak. I know of few westerners who have been compelled to quit the Emirates for economic reasons. Some sectors are, in fact, thriving. Oil and gas are expanding - perhaps no surprise there -as, in parts, is the banking sector.
