Later this month, Guernsey-based institute member John Falla will be living a long-held dream: he will join more than 40 other hopefuls in the 2009 OSTAR, currently the toughest race there is for amateur sailors.rnFor an estimated 25 days, Falla, a corporate financier with LCF Edmond de Rothschild, will face the dangers of fog and icebergs as he attempts to sail single-handedly the 2,900 miles across the Atlantic, from Plymouth to Rhode Island. To add to his difficulties, he will be battling against the prevailing winds and tides.rnIt is the thirteenth time the race has been held and he is only too well aware that not everyone succeeds. 'To put the challenge into context,' he explains, 'approximately 4,000 peoplernhave reached the summit of Mount Everest, but only 400 have completed the OSTAR.'
