摘要

Famed for its over-the-top performances, the Eurovision Song Contest is being held in Russia in May. Western European countries including the UK and France have received few votes in recent years, complaining of politically biased voting from Eastern European counterparts. But what the losers fail to appreciate is that victory rarely goes to the 'best' or 'most talented' people.rnAnd the same is true at work. Too many people grumble about decisions they see as 'unfair' - about promotions or pay rises going to rivals who were less talented or less hardworking. For them, such decisions clearly illustrate the injustice and political nature of working life.rnIn the meantime, politically savvy people are taking the plum positions, the bigger salaries, and the best opportunities because they realise that few decisions - in life as well as work - are made entirely objectively.rnSavvy people appreciate that politicking is an essential part of organisational success. When they're fighting for project resources or defending their departments from job cuts, politically smart people are happy to use both formal and informal channels to influence decision makers.
