As I write this, the story rumbles on about an alleged food poisoning outbreak among customers of the Fat Duck in Bray, Berkshire, whose owner, chef Heston Blumenthal, can boast three Michelin stars, a best restaurant in the world-award and a guest of honour garland at the International Summit on Gastronomy. Initially, 40 people developed diarrhoea and vomiting after what should have been a memorable meal out, but as media coverage spread, the number claiming to have become ill after eating there has risen to over 400. So far, despite taking samples of everything in the fridge (not to mention the body fluids of the staff), the local public health department has failed to identify a cause. Is the outbreak caused by a cryptic superbug, Blumenthal's unconventional recipes, or - as the tabloids would have it - sabotage?
