One of the most enjoyable aspects of my time as president of our institute has been meeting and talking to members both here in the UK and around the world. There have been some memorable moments - an evening reception on the lawns of the British high commissioner's residence in Delhi, interrupted by fireworks from the Hindu wedding celebrations taking place just over the garden wall, was truly magical. But my overwhelming feeling is that the world really is getting smaller and that although the institute now boasts 135,000 members, we remain a close-knit family.
