When I returned from a Caribbean business trip in October, I found UK Q2 GDP growth had been re-estimated down to 0.1 %, exports had been lacklustre to say the least, retail sales figures were gloomy and public debt looked likely to overshoot as a result of the general malaise. But the government is confident that its own strategy is right and that the problem is the global economic situation and mismanagement of the eurozone.
