Ministers are often quick to discredit their predecessors. Yet the latest coalition initiative, Opening Doors, Breaking Barriers: A Strategy for Social Mobility, represents continuity rather than change. The new strategy echoes previous government calls, dating back over a decade, to ensure that birth is not a determinant of opportunity. It sets out a 'life-cycled' approach to social mobility with greater emphasis placed on the role of internships in bridging the transition from education to employment. The strategy also challenges the 'who you know rather than what you know' recruitment culture, despite the deputy prime minister's own admission that his father arranged his first internship.
