Restaurants are set to be the next target in the government's war on tax dodgers but fears are growing that HM Revenue & Customs does not have the resources to maintain such campaigns. HMRC said it was launching a number of task forces to tackle tax evasion. The first will focus on the restaurant trade, initially targeting businesses in London. The specialist teams will undertake compliance activity in specific high-risk trade sectors and locations across the UK. The restaurant trades in Scotland and the North West will be the next areas targeted. HMRC said the move came as a result of the government's £900m spending review investment to tackle tax evasion, avoidance and fraud from 2011 /12, which aims to raise an additional £7bn each year by 2014/15.
