Last October, the UK's biggest banks made a series of commitments to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The Business Finance Taskforce was set up to analyse the facts, create momentum, ensure money is lent prudently to viable small to medium companies, and support the economic recovery. The taskforce was announced in the government's green paper Financing a Private Sector Recovery. The banks set about delivering on these commitments. Some were relatively straight forward and could be implemented right away. For instance, banks now commit to contacting their business customers 12 months ahead of the expiry of a loan, allowing plenty of lead time to plan the next steps. Others are still being worked through with the taskforce banks, with implementation due by the second quarter of 2011.
