The service sector appeared to weaken in February, according to the Purchasing Managers Index, released last month, which showed a fall in the activity index from 54.5 in January to 52.6 in February. The index is now well below its long-term average of 55.1, suggesting that after rebounding in the first month of this year, following a snow-hit December, private services companies have returned to the similar sluggish trends that have continued to dog the sector since last summer.
