Accounting for financial instruments has always been both complex and controversial. IAS 39, Financial Instruments: Recognition and Measurement, the financial instruments standard during the last decade, was more than 10 years in the making. Sir David Tweedie used to joke: 'If anyone says they understand IAS 39, they haven't read it properly.'
