Keats may have found a 'season of mist and mellow fruitfulness' in the autumn but the Chancellor had a debt cloud to contend with when he delivered his Autumn Statement on 29 November. Amidst the gloomy growth figures, there were a few items that might have raised a small cheer. For start-up businesses, there was the announcement of a renamed initiative, now entitled the Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme. An individual can invest up to E100,000 in qualifying businesses. Pleasingly, albeit only for one year, the government will offer a complete capital gains tax (CGT) exemption where such gains are invested through the scheme and income tax relief at 50% regardless of your applicable tax rate.
