HMRC has changed its data collection methods with effect 1 September so that it will have access to information on all credit and debit card payments to UK businesses to enable it to track the number and value of transactions with the aim to reduce tax fraud by some £50m. The new powers to access merchant data, introduced under Finance Act 2013, do not permit access to personal data identifying the card owners or card numbers. But the data will be used to ensure traders have accounted correctly for all taxes.
