It was the annual finance offsite day. This year the event had received a fashion makeover and had been renamed the 'strategy offsite'. Senior management in large pics are used to such gatherings in the Cayman Islands or somewhere nice. Alternatively if you work for a tobacco company, yours are probably held in Mordor. Our strategy offsite was held in a hotel, 50 yards from the office.Not that I could complain about the venue, the CFO's PA had got an excellent deal, the hotel was recently refurbished, I arrived nice and early to spend an enjoyable 30 minutes reading the paper, drinking coffee and eating luxury pastries. Barely five minutes had passed before I was joined by the Treasurer. Given that it was 8.30 and we had a full programme until six followed by dinner, I could have waited a bit longer before engaging, but I like the Treasurer and he was ballast against further interruptions.
