So now we know what it takes to be culturally British. Forget what Gordon Brown tried to do during the dying days of the previous government, because now Cameron and co have really nailed it. Apparently, a video game called Spacepants, designed by a 12-year-old, is a great example of Britishness. As is the slightly more sophisticated shoot 'em up saga, Beyond Flesh & Blood. Both these games, and a handful of other pixelated playthings, have just been granted 25% tax relief on their production costs by the Treasury after passing the British Film Institute's stringent cultural test, amounting to a fine £35m of tax relief available for the next three years. One has to hope that the scheme is not jumped on by that other great British culture of tax avoidance, as shown in some of the more creative film tax relief schemes that have hit the headlines recently.
