Reaching any conclusive position on a hierarchy of crime is always a subjective and often emotive undertaking. Indeed, there is a compelling argument that crimes should not be considered in relation to each other, and instead on their own terms. Murder and other violent crimes, for instance, are hardly comparable with fraud. But what is striking when examining the sentences meted out for financial crimes is how wildly they vary.
