EXAMINING THE IMPACT AND ROLE OF SPECIAL ISSUE AND REGULAR JOURNAL ARTICLES IN THE FIELD OF MANAGEMENT

One of the key ways in which many scientific fields (including management) develop is through scholarly journal publication (MeWilliams, Siegel, & Van Fleet, 2005; Spencer, 2001). The top journals in a field serve as a collection and dissemination system, annually gathering in thousands of submissions that are then carefully evaluated and critiqued by reviewers. Ideally, this process plays out as a sort of intellectual Darwinism, with manuscripts that survive the peer review process being published by a journal and those not meeting the journal's standards being discarded.
