Study on the Feasibility of Wind Power Supply Across Asia Focusing on Electricity Transmission Costs

This study analyzes the feasibility of large scale wind power supply in Asia, focusing on the role of electricity transmission from wind farms across country borders. Large scale deployment of wind energy resources that contribute to decarbonize energy supply will require the utilization of potential wind farms located in remote areas. Optimal allocation of wind power to closest energy demand centers can be affected by limiting supply across country borders. This study estimates the unit cost of wind power supply including transmission costs, and considering the allocation of power supply to closest urban area. The methodology is based on GIS model for estimating the technical potential of wind energy, and proximity to urban areas.
