Australia is a nation with abundant energy resources -both renewable and non-renewable, but remains largely dependent on fossiIfuels (predominately coal) for its electricity. In order to achieve its targets of reducing emissions, it must seek to drastical ly reduce emissions from electricity. This can be achieved by a variety of zero or low-carbon technologies, but must also be achieved with increasing electricity demand.While Australia is a major producer of Uranium for global nuclear power fleets, it is not a significant consumer, as the operation of nuclear power plants is illegal under present legislation. However, nuclear power is an option in the mitigation mix that should receive due consideration in the Australian context.
