In this work, the dyeing behavior of different polyamide 6 (nylon 6) fibers, having small differences in their microstructure induced by different draw ratios, is studied. Separate dyeings on each sample were carried out together with simultaneous competitive dyeings of each substrate group. The following dyes were used: an acid dye, a 2:1 mixture of premetalized dyes, and a disperse dye. The amino-end groups, crystallinity (differential scanning calorimetry), and orientation (sonic modulus) were determined. The results obtained establish a relationship between fiber fine structure and dye absorption. This in turn determines to what extent a manufacturing process variable modifies the dyeing behavior of the substrate and helps to determine the causes of irregular dyeing behavior.
