Colin Rowe wrote these geographically anxious words to his friends Elizabeth Boyarsky, an English compatriot, and her Canadian husband Alvin, a junior faculty member in the school of architecture in distant Eugene, Oregon. Rowe had met the young couple while teaching at Cornell University in 1957, a period when Boyarsky was a graduate student in urban planning. His words reflect a close friendship and obvious affection, born out of Sunday brunches and dinner parties in upstate New York.
