    摘要:Some athletes use solid rubber platforms strapped onto the forefoot during plyometric exercises in order to increase their explosive performance including vertical jump height and agility. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of a plyometric training program realized with these ‘raised forefoot platforms,’ designed to keep the heels off the ground, to the same program conducted with regular shoes. Forty-nine subjects performed 2 sessions of plyometric training for eight weeks, either with raised forefoot platforms (n=20) or regular shoes (n=29). Countermovement jump (CMJ) height and agility test time were evaluated at pre-, mid- and post-training program. Compared to baseline values, four and eight weeks of plyometric training significantly increased CMJ and agility performances in the raised forefoot platforms and regular shoes groups. However, compared to regular shoes, wearing raised forefoot platforms during training induced significantly better performances in CMJ at week 4 (+4.4cm) and week 8 (+7.2cm) and in agility at week 8 (−0.466s). Thus, while an 8-week plyometric training program was effective at improving both CMJ and agility performance for both shoe conditions, the improvements were greater for the group wearing raised forefoot platforms.

    摘要:The response of blood lactate concentration (BLC) to exercise is a commonly used approach to set training intensities and to determine the anaerobic threshold, which are important in evaluation of endurance exercise performance. The maximal lactate steady state (MLSS) is defined as the highest workload or BLC that can be maintained without continual lactate accumulation over time. The aim of this study was to investigate MLSS in the cross-country skiing sub-technique double poling and to assess the validity of a fixed blood lactate threshold (OBLA and the 45° tangent of the lactate curve). Eight well-trained cross-country skiers (age = 27.6±8.8 years [mean±SD], body mass = 73.9±6.2 kg, height = 179.3±7.0 cm) performed an incremental test to determine OBLA and Individual Anaerobic Threshold (IAnT) and several constant workload tests of 30 min to determine the MLSS. Lactate concentration at MLSS in double poling was 6.7±1.3 mmol ·L−1 which was significantly higher compared to OBLA (p<0.001) and IAnT (p<0.01). Despite significant correlations in velocities between MLSS-IAnT and MLSS-OBLA (r=0.95/0.95, p<0.001), significant (p<0.01) differences between MLSS (21.4±2.8 km ·h−1) versus IAnT (20.6±3.6 km ·h−1) and OBLA (19.9±3.0 km ·h−1) was observed. It was concluded that both OBLA and IAnT underestimate MLSS in double poling. A fixed value of 7 mmol ·L−1 would be more appropriate in lactate testing of cross-country skiers using the double poling technique, yet dissuaded because of intra-individual variations. Direct determination of MLSS is the recommended approach for useful exercise thresholds, important for training interventions in elite cross-country skiers.

    摘要:L-arginine is used as a nitric oxide related supplement intended to improve sports performance, and to enhance muscular recovery during exercise. However, the literature is inconclusive. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of acute oral L-arginine supplementation on O2 consumption kinetics and local muscle blood volume and oxygenation during treadmill running at two different intensities. Using a double-blind, crossover and placebo-controlled design, 11 young healthy male adults were randomly assigned to 6 g of L-arginine (ARG) or placebo (PLA) supplementation that was ingested 60 min before the exercise test. Tests consisted of treadmill run at two different intensities (5 min each; moderate, 90% of ventilatory threshold, VT; and heavy, 50% of the difference between VT and VO2peak) interspersed by 1-min walking. Respiratory gas exchange variables were measured continuously with an automated metabolic cart. Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) was used to continuously monitor muscle oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin and total hemoglobin. Blood samples were collected before supplementation and 6 min after exercise. Two-way repeated measures ANOVA did not show differences in plasma nitrite concentrations between ARG or PLA conditions during the running tests. No significant differences were observed between ARG and PLA conditions for O2 kinetics as well as for NIRS variables. ARG supplementation does not improve physiological responses associated with oxygen cost and NIRS variables during running treadmill tests. Hence, our results do not support the use of L-arginine as an ergogenic aid for running performance in young healthy males.

    摘要:The present study aims to develop the Physical Activity Tracking Preference Questionnaire (PATPQ), a measure of unit (distance, steps, calories, minutes) preference for tracking physical activity. The PATPQ was developed in two phases. During Phase One, the initial PATPQ was created (24 items), was assessed by an expert panel for face validity, and tested in 557 adults. Results were used to revise and modify the PATPQ. In Phase Two, the item pool was expanded and tested in 374 adults. Kuder-Richardson Formula 20 scores for internal consistency and interclass correlations for test-retest reliability were calculated. Internal consistency for the final questionnaire was 0.78, 0.79, 0.89 and 0.69 for the distance, steps, calories, and minutes components, respectively. Test-retest reliability coefficients were within acceptable ranges (0.65–0.75). Overall, the PATPQ can be used to identify individual preferences for tracking physical activity to help personalize exercise programs.

    摘要:This study examined the effects of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) on ankle range of motion in college athletes. Twenty-five Division II college athletes (18–24 yrs) were randomly selected into two groups: experimental group (n = 11) and control group (n = 14). Baseline measurements for both groups included an initial squat assessment, which measured ankle dorsiflexion during the movement, followed by IASTM with ankle rehabilitation exercises, and a secondary squat assessment. During the following week, the experimental group participated in an additional IASTM with rehabilitation session and squat test, while the control group performed a squat test with no treatment. Finally, both groups performed a final squat assessment during the third week after no IASTM treatment. Angle of the ankle during the deepest part of the squat was measured for all four testing sessions for both groups. On average, the ankle angle significantly decreased from the third session to maintenance session. However, post-hoc analyses revealed that a significant decrease in ankle angle was measured from the third session to the maintenance session in the experimental group only. The decrease in ankle angle in the experimental group shows that IASTM increased range of motion by allowing more dorsiflexion during the deepest part of the squat with greatest gains in range of motion found over time during the maintenance period. Thus, IASTM may be used as a performance enhancing tool that has the potential to temporarily increase range of motion and flexibility in college athletes.

    摘要:This study examined the relationship between subjective ratings of overall wellness and neuromuscular performance throughout a 6-week intensive offseason strength and conditioning program. Thirty experienced NCAA Division II baseball players completed all phases of the program. A comprehensive wellness rating and 5 countermovement jumps (CMJ5) were measured and averaged for 4 phases of training. Pre- and post-testing measures of strength and speed also were evaluated. Internal consistency of the wellness rating for each phase ranged α = 0.77–0.92, and CMJ5 velocities had decent consistency (ICCα = 0.88, TE = 0.19 m·s−1, CV = 5.90%). The training program evoked significant (p < 0.01) improvements in front squats (d = 0.55), trap bar deadlifts (d = 0.62), chin ups (d = 0.39), 30-yd dash (d = 0.39), with no change in the 300-yd dash (p > 0.05), where d is the treatment effect size. Average CMJ5 velocities (m·s−1) were similar for the preparation phase (1.90 ± 0.25), eccentric phase (1.91 ± 0.28), strength & power phase (1.91 ± 0.24), and recovery phase (1.91 ± 0.30; F = 0.04, p = 0.99, ηp2 = 0.001). No significant correlations were observed for pre-or post-testing measures of wellness ratings in comparison to any performance measures, including a composite standardized score from each performance test at pre-testing (r = 0.22, p = 0.26). The CMJ5 exhibited too high of a typical error to determine a change in neuromuscular status. Additionally, the wellness rating did not reflect changes in relation to performance.

    摘要:Multiple ingredient pre-workout supplements (MIPS) are purported to offer favorable acute metabolic changes potentially leading to improvements in body composition and training adaptations over time. However, there is limited information available regarding the long-term benefits and safety of consuming MIPS, specifically in female populations. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of pre-workout ingestion on body composition, training adaptations and select markers of clinical health in recreationally active females after 7 weeks of supplementation and resistance training. Nineteen participants participated in a randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled study. Experimental testing included resting heart rate and blood pressure, blood lipid panels, body composition, resting metabolic testing and performance measurements before and after a seven-week resistance training program while ingesting either a MIPS or placebo once daily. There were no significant group x time interactions for changes in body fat percentage (p=0.66), fat-free mass (p=0.87), fat mass (p=0.63) or resting metabolic rate (p=0.52). Both groups showed significant improvements in upper (p<0.001) and lower body (p<0.001) maximal strength following the 7-week training period however no differences in upper (p=0.74) and lower body (p=0.53) strength improvements were observed between groups, respectively. No significant group x time interactions were observed for any of the markers of clinical health. In conclusion, the current study suggests that daily consumption of a MIPS does not enhance training adaptations in recreationally active females and does not appear to negatively affect resting blood pressure, heart rate and blood lipids.

    摘要:The primary aim of this investigation was to determine the ergogenic effect of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) amongst twenty apparently healthy males during submaximal exercise. In Session 1, 20 participants (Age = 35.0 ± 15.0 yrs; Height = 179.9 ± 8.5 cm; Body Mass = 85.4 ± 12.0 kg) were familiarized with all equipment. Sessions 2–4 included the following randomized 5-min trials a) Rest and Rest+NMES, b) Rest, Arms-Only, Arms+NMES, and c) Rest, Arms+Legs, Arms+Legs+NMES. Physiological variables collected during rest and submaximal exercise were volume of oxygen (VO2), heart rate (HR), systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP), respiratory exchange ratio (RER), and rate pressure product (RPP). Paired sample t-test was used to determine significant mean differences between the NMES and non-NMES trials. Bonferroni post-hoc analysis established alpha at 0.008. From the 18 paired t-tests, the only observed significant mean difference (t() = −6.4, p < 0.001) was RER values between the Arms-Only trial compared to the Arms+NMES trial (0.94 and 1.00, respectively). While RER displayed a significant difference, from a practical perspective, however, these differences were deemed non-physiologically significant. Viewed in concert, findings from this study suggests that NMES utilization does not evoke an acute ergogenic effect amongst an apparently healthy male population.

    摘要:Specialist police are required to perform high risk and dangerous tasks that are physically demanding. The aims of this study were to establish the natures and contexts of tasks performed by specialist police officers and to explore the physical fitness regimes they undertake to maintain their operational fitness for these tasks. A survey approach was employed and members of operational units of the Australian and New Zealand Police Tactical Groups (PTG) participated in the survey. A total of nine (100%) PTG units cooperated, with 132 respondents (31% of the PTG operational members) from these units completing the online survey. The occupational task most commonly recently undertaken by PTG was a high-risk warrant execution (62% of respondents) followed by rural operations (11% of respondents). The nature and environment of operations varied, and external load was carried in all operational circumstances, with loads typically 21–25 kg. All officers undertook regular physical training, with 73% focusing the physical training on occupation-specific training. Whether the training was actually occupation-specific was difficult to determine, given the current lack of research identifying the physical fitness requirements of key occupational tasks undertaken by specialist police.

The purpose of this study was to compare the responses of Tai Chi and walking on measures of central and peripheral cardiac mechanisms when controlling for exercise intensity. Fifteen hypertensive subjects (2 males, 13 females; age = 20.7 ± 3.77 years; body fat = 24.26 ± 10.27%) participated in Tai Chi (TC) and walking (WK) for 30 minutes on non-consecutive days. Central systolic (CSBP) and diastolic blood pressure (CDBP), augmentation index (Alx), pulse pressure (PP), heart rate (HR), and brachial systolic (BSBP) and diastolic blood pressure (BDBP) were measured prior to exercise and following exercise every 10 minutes for a total of 60 minutes in a seated position. There were no significant differences between the two exercise forms. CSBP decreased 10 minutes after exercise in both exercise types (TC = 6.63 ± 3.258 mmHG; WK = 7 ± 4.144 mmHG p < 0.05), and 40 minutes after exercise in both exercise types (TC = 6.07 ± 3.33 mmHG; WK = 8.2 ± 3.15 mmHG, p < 0.05) compared to the initial measurement. BSBP also decreased in both exercise forms following 10 min of rest (TC = 6.99 ± 3.776 mmHG; WK = 8.8 ± 3.20 mmHG p = 0.05), and 40 min (TC = 8.46 ± 3.07 mmHG; WK = 8.87 ± 3.87 mmHG, p < 0.05) when compared to the initial resting measurement. Central aortic pressure exhibits a post exercise hypotensive (PEH) effect similar to that of peripheral blood pressure. Both Tai Chi and walking elicited similar PEH effects on systolic blood pressure in hypertensive individuals.

Each group was matched for training volume. Peak power (PP) was assessed via a 15 sec maximal rowing ergometer test. Using the Ergdata mobile app, PP, peak force (PF), average force (AF), drive speed (DS), and stroke at which PP was achieved (PPstroke) were measured and recorded for later offline analysis.

A qualitative literature review indicates certain factors may impact the PhD student’s success in completing the program and degree. The factors focused on in this review include the student-advisor relationship, mentorship, and the dissertation process. Although kinesiology doctoral programs are evaluated and ranked by the National Academy of Kinesiology, little information is available exploring kinesiology PhD student success. General information on PhD student success may, therefore, be valuable to kinesiology PhD students and programs.

    摘要:This study compared athletic performance differences among high school American football combine participants originating from states of different population sizes. High school-aged American football players (n=7,214) who had participated in athletic performance combines between March 2015 and January 2016 were included in this analysis. Data included combine date and location, school state of origin, football position, class, height, weight, 10-, 20-, and 40-yd dash times, pro-agility, L-cone drill, vertical jump, broad jump, and power push-up. Participants were separated into high- (state population>10,000,000; HIGH; n=2,804), mid- (state population=5,000,000–9,999,999; MID; n=2,911), or low-population (state population<5,000,000; LOW; n=1,499) state of origin. Data were allometrically scaled to account for differences in body mass across high school grade levels and American football positions. All statistical analyses were performed on the allometrically scaled data. LOW athletes performed better than HIGH athletes in the 20-yd dash (p≤0.01). LOW athletes performed better than HIGH and MID in the 40-yd dash, pro-agility, broad jump, and power push-up (p<0.01). LOW and HIGH athletes performed better than MID in the L-cone and vertical jump (p<0.01). When considering population size, athletes originating from LOW states may demonstrate higher levels of athletic performance in football combine events hypothetically due to more opportunities for sports participation and playing time, leading to greater athletic development. Youth and high school coaches in MID and HIGH states might consider providing more opportunities for playing and individualized coaching to encourage long-term athletic development.

The Editors of IJES take pride in providing these opportunities for student involvement, and we are constantly seeking new and innovative ways to enhance students’ professional development. As our readership has expanded across the globe and our scope has broadened to cross many Kinesiology related disciplines, we believe it is timely to revisit the purpose of peer-review, give advice on best practices, and provide a template for reviews. Presenting these guiding principles should simplify and streamline both the review and the revision processes for students and professionals alike.

Participants (n=20) were randomized to one of four groups, (1) a MyPlate diet (MP), (2) Paleolithic-based diet (PD), (3) MyPlate and exercise (MP + Ex), and (4) Paleolithic-based diet and exercise (PD + Ex). The exercise included two days of unsupervised aerobic and resistance exercise. At baseline and final, absolute and relative peak oxygen consumption (absVO2peak and relVO2peak), anaerobic power, and upper and lower body strength were determined. Data were analyzed using repeated measures two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The ANOVA indicated that there was no significant interaction between time point (TP)*diet (D)*exercise (Ex) for all variables except relVO2peak (p = 0.016). The MP + Ex group (Δ+4.4 ml·kg−1·min−1) had a greater change from baseline compared to the MP group (Δ−2.7 ml·kg−1·min−1, p = 0.002), and PD + Ex group (Δ−0.3 ml·kg−1·min−1, p = 0.03). The results suggest recommending a MyPlate diet with both aerobic and resistance training are effective at improving aerobic fitness when compared to PD recommendations with exercise, although these conclusions may be confounded by low compliance to exercise recommendations.

    摘要:This study characterized both aerobic and anaerobic energy expenditure (EE) for several Polynesian dances in a group of experienced professional Polynesian dancers. Thirteen men and 17 women were tested using indirect calorimetry to assess aerobic EE (and converted to METs), and fingertip blood lactate to estimate anaerobic EE, during both resting and dancing activities. Total EE was then computed as the sum of both aerobic and anaerobic activity energy expenditure (AEE, or EE above resting). One sample t-tests compared mean MET values for each type of dance to the 3-MET and 6-MET thresholds for moderate and vigorous physical activity (MVPA), respectively. Mean MET values for all dances, except the Maori poi balls dance (Mean±SD: 3.7±1.1 METs; P=0.340), were significantly >3.0 METs (5.9±3.1 METS; P=0.005 for Maori haka; 6.5±2.4 METs for Hawaiian hula; 6.6±1.2 METs for Samoan sasa; 9.6±1.5 METs for Samoan slap; 8.3±1.8 METs for Tahitian; 6.0±2.3 METs for Tongan; 7.0±2.6 METs for Fijian; P<0.001). Mean METs for Samoan slap and Tahitian were also significantly >6.0 METs (P=0.002 and P<0.001, respectively). Aerobic and anaerobic AEE contributed an average of 83.4% and 16.6%, respectively, across all Polynesian dances, with Hawaiian hula being the most aerobic (88.7%) and Samoan slap being the least aerobic (74.2%). Thus, the Polynesian dances tested not only met the current MVPA intensity guidelines (i.e., ≥3.0 METs), each dance also had a large anaerobic EE. These data suggest that Polynesian dancing is an appropriate mode of aerobic exercise for health promotion and disease prevention.

    摘要:The purpose of this study was to compare power outputs of the flying start to the stationary start method on an electromagnetically–braked cycle ergometer. Twenty advanced resistance-trained men (age 24.6 ± 4.5 years; 25.4 ± 2.5 kg/m2) volunteered to participate in this study. A counter-balanced, repeated-measures design was utilized to randomly assign participants to either the flying start or the stationary start for their first Wingate test. Paired t tests were used to evaluate mean differences between start methods. Peak power (PP), mean power (MP), total work (TW), peak cadence (PC), mean cadence (MC), and time to reach peak power (TPP) were recorded. Start method revealed significant differences for PP (p<0.01; flying start = 1,111 ± 42 W vs. stationary start = 854 ± 41 W) and PC attainment (p<0.01; flying start = 167 ± 7 RPM vs. stationary start = 128 ± 5 RPM). Start method did not significantly affect MP (p=0.73; flying start 673 ± 30 W vs. stationary start 657 ± 34 W) or MC (p=0.61; flying start 102 ± 5 RPM vs. 99 ± 4 RPM). The flying start method allowed for not only a greater PP but also a faster TPP (0.24 ± 0.02 seconds). In contrast, TPP was not attained until approximately one-third of the stationary start test (10.3 ± 0.4 seconds). This study showed that the traditional flying start allowed higher PP and PC outputs when compared to the alternative stationary start method in a sample of advanced resistance-trained male participants.

    摘要:To evaluate if the Hexoskin smart shirt (HxS) would produce valid and reliable measurements for heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), minute ventilation (VE), step count (SC), and energy expenditure (EE) when compared to a Polar T-31 heart rate monitor, an Applied Electrochemistry Moxus Metabolic System, and a manual step count. A two-day walking treadmill protocol with participants walking for 3 minutes at 3 speeds (1.5mph, 2.5mph, 3.5mph, 0% grade) was performed. Forty-nine volunteers participated the first day, forty-six on the second, thirty-one were used for reliability. Values calculated for the HxS data used Pearson’s product-moment correlation (p < 0.05; r ≥ 0.70) for validity and Cronbach’s α (≥ 0.70) for reliability. HxS HR (1.5mph; p<0.01, r=0.86, α=0.86. 2.5mph; p<0.01, r=0.81, α=0.88. 3.5mph; p<0.01, r=0.85, α=0.85), HxS RR (1.5mph; p<0.01, r=0.87, α=0.93. 2.5mph; p<0.01, r=0.86, α=0.92. 3.5mph; p<0.01, r=0.71, α=0.76), HxS VE (1.5mph; p=0.66, r=0.11, α=0.70. 2.5mph; p=0.01, r=0.15, α=0.73. 3.5mph; p=0.31, r=0.08, α=0.14), HxS SC (1.5mph; p=0.90, r=−0.01, α=0.70. 2.5mph; p=0.22, r=0.13, α=0.86. 3.5mph; p<0.01, r=0.74, α=0.85), HxS EE (1.5mph; p<0.01, r=0.56, α=0.85. 2.5mph; p<0.01, r=0.50, α=0.83. 3.5mph; p<0.01, r=0.51, α=0.80). HxS HR and RR provided valid and reliable measures at all three speeds while VE, SC, and EE had a mixture of results based on speed. These results are important in the use of the Hexoskin in an accurate manner for athletes, coaches, and for the potential medical applications being advocated in the field of telemedicine procedures.

    摘要:We investigated the validity of a recently developed equation for predicting sprinting times of various tactical loads based upon the performance of a running 3-min all-out exercise test (3MT). Thirteen recreationally trained participants completed the running 3MT to determine critical velocity (CV) and finite running capacity for running velocities exceeding CV (D′). Two subsequent counterbalanced loaded sprints of 800 and 1000 m distances with 20 and 15% of their body mass, respectively, were evaluated. Estimated times (t, sec) for running 800 and 1000 m with a tactical load was derived using t = (D − D′)/CV. Critical velocity adjusted for an added load using the following regression equation: original CV + (−0.0638 × %load) + 0.6982, D was 800 or 1000 m, and whole percentage load was ~15 or 20% of the participant’s body mass. From the 3MT, CV (3.80 ± 0.5 m·s−1) and D′ (200 ± 49.88 m) values were determined. The typical error of predicting actual times for the 800 and 1000 m loaded sprints were 5.6 and 10.1 s, with corresponding ICCs of 0.95 and 0.87, and coefficient of variations of 2.9 and 4.3%. The effect size differences between estimated and actual sprint times were small (0.27) and moderate (0.60) for 800 and 1000 m, respectively. The adjustment to CV through the regression equation yields small to moderate overestimates of maximally loaded sprint times for distances of 800 and 1000 m. Whether such errors remain pervasive for prescribing high-intensity interval training is unclear and requires further investigation.
