Despite coming from a poor rural farming background in Western Pennsylvania, Charles W. (Chuck) Kerber was able to avoid the coal mines to the south and the steel mills to the north by means of a full academic scholarship at the University of Pittsburgh. The scholarship was given by the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association to the caddie with the most outstanding academic achievement.
