摘要

Orthopaedic surgeons still modify the acetabular liners they use at least in part to reduce the risk of dislocation after total hip replacement. In the early 1960s, Sir John Charnley developed the long-posterior-wall cup, a polyethylene (PE) component that offered a few millimeters of increased platform to support the femoral head posteriorly before the summit of the sphere reaches the critical point of instability [2]. Since those early days, a variety of acetabular cups and liner designs have been developed to improve hip joint stability and reduce the risk of dislocation, which remains one of the most-frequent causes of revision after total hip replacement [10]. Each design has benefits and potential drawbacks. Properly used, cemented or uncemented PE lipped liners can reduce the risk of dislocation. However, the surgeon should be aware of the material properties and geometry of the various liner types in order to understand their impact on the patient’s hip mechanics.
