Beginning in December 2019, Dr Li Wenliang, an ophthalmologist, was silenced by the Chinese government as he tried to alert health authorities about a novel and deadly disease similar to SARS. On December 31, 2019, the first report of an epidemic of a serious respiratory disease caused by a new coronavirus virus originating in Wuhan (Hubei province), China was made to the local World Health Organization office. The virus and disease were termed Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS‐CoV‐2) coronavirus 2. The disease caused by this virus was later named COVID‐19.1
