You get a professional liability insurance bill 50% higher than last year; even worse, your insurance carrier stops writing policies in Missouri. Who you gonna call? Your staff is swamped by prior authorization requests and your patients are unable to get the medications or procedures they urgently need. Who you gonna call? You are laid off and replaced by a non-physician clinician by your hospital employer for “budgetary” reasons. Who you gonna call? Your gym ($3000/yr)? Your cellphone operator ($3000/yr)? Your Internet and TV service provider ($3000/yr)? Maybe your hospital CEO will help? I don’t think so—forty years ago, 97% of them were MDs. Today just 3% are. Their interests are rarely aligned with those of physicians.
