( ) Interior view of the same valve, where chalky deposits are outlined in a dashed gray line, and the muscle scar is outlined in a dashed white line. ( ) Cross section from an oyster belonging to a different cohort of oysters grown under the same conditions. The gray halo around the shell is the epoxy used to mount and section the shell onto a glass slide. Chalk appears as opaque white lenses interspersed throughout the shell, whereas the folia present as translucent to gray in color. The newest layer of folia at the commissure (open triangle) does not extend past the previous layer (filled triangle). These structures together represent an incipient growth break. Scale bars are 1 cm.
