This morning (3/19/2020) I was told our distinguished, nationally known ophthalmology practice was complying with the recommendations of the American Academy of Ophthalmology for dealing with the COVID-19 Pandemic. Our huge practice is closed for all but emergent eye care and is doing no major surgery. For the first time in my life since about age 6, I don’t have a part-time or full-time job. Like millions of other Americans and billions of others around the world, I’m stunned, dumbfounded and furloughed until it’s safe to leave shelter and rebuild a normal world. My medical ophthalmology skills and my age do not allow me to assist our badly overworked colleagues in hospitals and emergency rooms. I will be sheltering in my home. Fortunately, Becky, my wife of 52 years, is great company; as is our loveable, lazy black cat Lizzy.
