Hemoglobinopathies are the most common genetically inherited single-gene disorders in the world. Their associated negative economic impact affects mainly poorer countries. According to the World Health Organization, about 5.2% of the world populationand over 7% of pregnant women carry a significant variant, and 1.1% of couples worldwideare at risk for having children with a hemoglobin disorder. Sickle cell trait or the hemoglobin S variant, which is the heterozygous statefor the sickle hemoglobin beta globin gene, is carried by as many as 100 millionindividuals worldwide.
