The study is to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of phytogenic additive (based on oregano essential oil) to the gestation and lactation sows on their oxidation stress status, feed intake, and their piglet performance. A total of eighty multiparous Large White sows were used and divided into two groups and each group had 40 animals.The control group was fed a basal diet and the treatment group was fed with the basal diet supplemented with 250 g/ton of Phytogen® (Meritech, Guangzhou China) which contains 8% of oregano (Origanum vulgare L.) essential oils. The experimental period was for both gestation and lactation. Results were analyzed by ANOVA using the general linear model procedure (SAS 8.0, Inst Inc., NC). The results demonstrated that the addition of Phytogen® tended to increase the feed intake (P=0.07) of sows in the third week of lactation, which resulted in higher average daily gain (P<0.01) of piglets and heavier litter size (P<0.05). The serum levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), 8-hydroxy-deoxyguansine(8-OHdG), and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) were significantly higher (P<0.05) during the late gestation (days 90 and 109) and the early lactation (days 1 and 3) than in the very early gestation (day 10). Compared with the control group, the treatment diet significantly reduced sows’ serum concentrations of 8-OHdG (P<0.05) and TBARS (P<0.01) on day 1 of lactation. The results demonstrated that there is an increased systemic oxidation stress during late gestation and early lactation of sows. The phytogenic supplementation to sows’ diet improved performance of their piglets, which may be attributed to the reduced oxidation stress.
