From honest mistakes to fake news – approaches to correcting the scientific literature

On the occasion of recently published errata in Head & Face Medicine [ – ], the question arose how to deal with errors in a published article. Making, discovering and correcting errors is a normal process in science and is often referred to as a self-correcting process. Fortunately the number of errata in Head & Face Medicine is very low [ – ] and so does not pose a risk in making clinical decisions.
