ENVIRONMENTAL GERONTOLOGY: OLDER ADULT PARTICIPATION IN DESIGN FROM NURSING HOME TO NEIGHBORHOOD

摘要

The design of the built environment can facilitate or hinder older adults as they navigate their living space in the home and community. This symposium sponsored by the Environmental Gerontology Interest Group examines the challenges of design implementation in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and neighborhoods to create an age friendly environment. These four presentatons offer findings from studies in which older adults participated with researchers and community members in various environments to identify specific features of the built environment to enhance their physical activity, and engage in social interaction. Each setting presents its unique challenges for funding and implementing the design recommendations.
