Several declarations call for bridging of aging and disability, to address system level challenges and support individuals with disability as they age. As the practice of bridging has been poorly defined, this scoping review aimed to synthesize available evidence on bridging, and characterise the concept by describing the types of knowledge exchange and collaboration activities occurring at different levels. Nine online databases were searched to identify peer reviewed articles that focused on a population of individuals aging with a lifelong disability, and described intentional activities to bridge knowledge or services, in aging and disability. Two raters independently screened all articles and 49 studies met the inclusion criteria. Qualitative content analysis was used to characterise the bridging activities, and a range of categories emerged including: research activities (e.g., needs analysis), education and training, advocacy, case management and service development. Next steps will be to develop a taxonomy delineating bridging concepts.
