摘要

The convoy model situates group involvement as a component of network structure. Researchers usually count the number of groups, overlooking how individuals may have diverse experiences in various groups. Using interviews with older gay men in Atlanta, I compare participants’ perceptions of their involvement in two groups, asking: (1) How are participants’ perceptions of their involvement similar/different; (2) What aspects of the groups influence their perceptions and their support networks? Participants in group A were enthusiastic about their involvement, and their group relationships. Those in group B were ambivalent about their involvement and ties. All participants received practical support from group members. Participants in group A reported that, in addition to practical support, group activities fostered emotional support and intimacy among members. To understand how group involvement shapes older adults’ networks, scholars need to explore variation in group involvement, and how involvement influences network function and quality.
