摘要

Older drivers are at disproportionate risk for serious injuries and fatalities in traffic crashes, and US crashes have been rising in recent years. However, cessation of driving can lead to the loss of independence and is a significant risk factor for negative health outcomes such as depression. Technologies such as advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicles (AVs) have been recommended to promote safer mobility for aging drivers. We review the results of three studies bearing on these recommendations. A representative survey of older Floridians indicated reluctance to purchase an AV if there was a price premium over a regular vehicle. In contrast, a study investigating ADAS showed greater valuation for blind spot detection technology. Finally, a simulator study showed improved lane keeping for a lane departure warning system but not greater headway for a forward collision warning system. We discuss implications for technology design.
