In the late 1970s, Intermountain Health Care (IHC), a not-for-profit hospital chain with 22 hospitals in the intermountain area and corporate offices located in Salt Lake City, Utah, began the arduous task of developing a corporate long-range data processing plan to meet its future information systems needs. Since that time the plan has not only been implemented throughout IHC, but has served as a cornerstone in IHC's efforts to offer attractive, profitable services to the health care marketplace. This paper describes the evolution of that process and summarizes IHC's current software developments.
