In 1979, the Department of Health, Education and Welfare National Center for Health Services Research awarded a contract to the University of Southern California Center for Health Services Research to develop a Workbook designed to assist hospital decision makers address the issues associated with the selection, acquisition, implementation and management of an automated hospital information system (AHIS). The methodology employed in this project focused on identifying and analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of the process employed by hospitals which have implemented an AHIS in order to present a thorough, logical set of procedures in a usable format. This report summarizes the process that was involved in the development of the Workbook, scheduled for completion in April, 1981, and highlights the key issues which the Workbook addresses.
