The author discusses the factors that led to the establishment of departments of family medicine in South Africa and presents relevant background information about the country. Family medicine is firmly established in South Africa and, in spite of resistance from traditional academic departments of medicine, there are departments of family medicine with varying degrees of autonomy at all of the medical schools in the country. The author believes that, in the near future, the right to practice general (family) medicine will require specific occupational training.
