The effectiveness of the combination of rectal electrostimulation and an antidepressant in the treatment of chronic abacterial prostatitis

IntroductionChronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) is a complex medical problem. Comorbid depression and chronic pain are highly prevalent in individuals suffering with chronic abacterial prostatitis (CAP) perhaps due to the direct or indirect effects of cytokines. Cytokines interact with the neuronal environment, and thus modulation of the duration of inflammation may alleviate depressive and pain symptoms. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effectiveness of combination of rectal electrostimulation and a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, sertraline, in the treatment of patients with chronic abacterial prostatitis and to determine the dynamics and links of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokine levels in the ejaculate.
