Epidemiology of malignant mesothelioma in Italy: surveillance systems territorial clusters and occupations involved

BackgroundAs a legacy of the large asbestos consumption until the definitive ban in 1992, Italy is currently suffering a severe epidemic of asbestos related diseases. The aim of this paper is to describe the surveillance system for mesothelioma incidence and to provide evidences regarding the occurrence of the disease in Italy and the circumstances of asbestos exposure.
