The In Vitro Activity of Peritoneal Exudate Cells of NZB/B1 and BALB/C Mice Following Intraperitoneal Injection of Spleen Cells from Diseased and Healthy NZB/B1 and From Old and Young BALB/C Mice

Intraperitoneal injection of live spleen and lymph node cells from Coombs positive NZB/B1 mice induces an increase in the total number of peritoneal exudate cells (PE cells) and splenomegaly in recipient Coombs negative animals and Balb/c mice. The recipient's PE cells showed an increased uptake of ¹²⁵I BSA and a decreased degradation of the BSA in culture. The possibility that the living spleen and lymph node cells elaborate a lymphocyte activation product that affects the activity of macrophages is discussed.
