    摘要:BackgroundOne of the most important processes in a machine learning-based natural language processing is to represent words. The one-hot representation that has been commonly used has a large size of vector and assumes that the features that make up the vector are independent of each other. On the other hand, it is known that word embedding has a great effect in estimating the similarity between words because it expresses the meaning of the word well. In this study, we try to clarify the correlation between various terms in the biomedical texts based on the excellent ability of estimating similarity between words shown by word embedding. Therefore, we used word embedding to find new biomarkers and microorganisms related to a specific diseases.

    摘要:BackgroundPolymerase chain reaction (PCR) is used in nucleic acid tests of infectious diseases in point-of-care testing. Previous studies have demonstrated real-time PCR that uses a micro-PCR chip made of packing tape, double-sided tape, and a plastic cover with polycarbonate or polypropylene on a black matte printed circuit board substrate. Despite the success of DNA amplification and fluorescence detection using an early version of the micro-PCR chip, reaching the target temperature was fairly slow and, as a result, the total running time was getting longer. To reduce this runtime, the micro-PCR chip was modified by reducing the heater pattern size of the PCB substrate to one-quarter of the original size or less, while maintaining the ability of the heating pattern to cover the reservoir area of the microfluidic channel. In subsequent experiments, DNA amplification failed several times. During the analysis of the cause of this failure, it was found that the reagent was boiling with the heating range from 25 to 95 °C.

The analysis of locomotion in laboratory rats facilitates the understanding of motor defects in many diseases, as well as the damage and recovery after peripheral and central nervous system injuries. However, locomotion analysis of rats remains a great challenge due to the necessity of labor intensive manual annotations of video data required to obtain quantitative measurements of the kinematics of the rodent extremities. In this work, we present a method that is based on the use of a bio-inspired algorithm that fits a kinematic model of the hind limbs of rats to binary images corresponding to the segmented marker of images corresponding to the rat’s gait. The bio-inspired algorithm combines a genetic algorithm for a group of the optimization variables with a local search for a second group of the optimization variables.

The present work tries to improve the prognostic of corneal ectasia creating a 3D customised model of the cornea and analysing different geometric variables from this model to determine which variables or combination of them could be defined as an indicator of susceptibility to develop keratoconus.

    摘要:The use of information and communication technologies for health (eHealth) delivered via mobile-based or digitally enhanced solutions (mHealth) have rapidly evolved. When used together across various mobile applications and devices eHealth and mHealth technologies have the ability to passively monitor behavior as an indicator of socialization and mood; accumulate a range of biomedical data such as weight and heart rate; and track metrics associated with activities including steps taken and hours slept. Yet, these technologies are insufficient for measuring the full array of data about an individual and the impact of that data on a person’s current and future health. Digital health converges eHealth and mHealth with patient data about their health, healthcare, living, and environment with genomics. An innovative opportunity to unravel the complexities of disease and aging is increasingly possible with an integrative multi-omics approach informed by multidisciplinary sciences including medicine, design, biomedical informatics and engineering. The digitization of individual level data from all available sources makes possible the development of DigitalMe™, a personalized virtual avatar of a real person. The combination of longitudinally collected person generated data and molecular data derived from biospecimens offers researchers unique opportunities to better understand the mechanisms of disease while advancing person-centric hypotheses generation related to treatments, diagnostics, and prognostics.

The improvement of diagnosis of lung cancer has significant clinical significance, which could be realized by machine learning techniques. At present, there have been a lot of researches focusing on solid nodules. But the research on ground glass nodules started late, and lacked research results. This paper summarizes the research progress of the method of intelligent diagnosis for pulmonary nodules since 2014. It is described in details from four aspects: nodular signs, data analysis methods, prediction models and system evaluation. This paper aims to provide the research material for researchers of the clinical diagnosis and intelligent analysis of lung cancer, and further improve the precision of pulmonary ground glass nodule diagnosis.

    摘要:Most commercially available cochlear implants and hearing aids use microphones as sensors for capturing the external sound field. These microphones are in general located in an external element, which is also responsible for processing the sound signal. However, the presence of the external element is the cause of several problems such as discomfort, impossibility of being used during physical activities and sleeping, and social stigma. These limitations have driven studies with the goal of developing totally implantable hearing devices, and the design of an implantable sensor has been one of the main challenges to be overcome. Different designs of implantable sensors can be found in the literature and in some commercial implantable hearing aids, including different transduction mechanisms (capacitive, piezoelectric, electromagnetic, etc), configurations microphones, accelerometers, force sensor, etc) and locations (subcutaneous or middle ear). In this work, a detailed technical review of such designs is presented and a general classification is proposed. The technical characteristics of each sensors are presented and discussed in view of the main requirements for an implantable sensor for hearing devices, including sensitivity, internal noise, frequency bandwidth and energy consumption. The feasibility of implantation of each sensor is also evaluated and compared.

    摘要:Critical care, like many healthcare areas, is under a dual assault from significantly increasing demographic and economic pressures. Intensive care unit (ICU) patients are highly variable in response to treatment, and increasingly aging populations mean ICUs are under increasing demand and their cohorts are increasingly ill. Equally, patient expectations are growing, while the economic ability to deliver care to all is declining. Better, more productive care is thus the big challenge. One means to that end is personalised care designed to manage the significant inter- and intra-patient variability that makes the ICU patient difficult. Thus, moving from current “one size fits all” protocolised care to adaptive, model-based “one method fits all” personalised care could deliver the required step change in the quality, and simultaneously the productivity and cost, of care. Computer models of human physiology are a unique tool to personalise care, as they can couple clinical data with mathematical methods to create subject-specific models and virtual patients to design new, personalised and more optimal protocols, as well as to guide care in real-time. They rely on identifying time varying patient-specific parameters in the model that capture inter- and intra-patient variability, the difference between patients and the evolution of patient condition. Properly validated, virtual patients represent the real patients, and can be used in silico to test different protocols or interventions, or in real-time to guide care. Hence, the underlying models and methods create the foundation for next generation care, as well as a tool for safely and rapidly developing personalised treatment protocols over large virtual cohorts using virtual trials. This review examines the models and methods used to create virtual patients. Specifically, it presents the models types and structures used and the data required. It then covers how to validate the resulting virtual patients and trials, and how these virtual trials can help design and optimise clinical trial. Links between these models and higher order, more complex physiome models are also discussed. In each section, it explores the progress reported up to date, especially on core ICU therapies in glycemic, circulatory and mechanical ventilation management, where high cost and frequency of occurrence provide a significant opportunity for model-based methods to have measurable clinical and economic impact. The outcomes are readily generalised to other areas of medical care.

    摘要:There are many situations where the skin and underlying soft tissues are compromised by mechanical loading in the form or pressure, or pressure in combination with shear. If sustained, this can lead to damage in the tissues particularly adjacent to bony prominences, resulting in chronic wounds. An array of bioengineering technologies have been adopted to assess the integrity of loaded soft tissues. This paper aims to review these approaches for the quantification, simulation and early detection of mechanically-induced skin damage. The review considers different measurements at the interface between the skin and support surface/medical device, involving pressure, shear, friction and the local microclimate. The potential of the techniques to monitor the physiological response of the skin to these external stimuli including biophysical measurement devices and sampling of biofluids are critically analysed. In addition, it includes an analysis of medical imaging technologies and computational modelling to provide a means by which tissue deformation can be quantified and thresholds for tissue damage defined. Bioengineering measurement and imaging technologies have provided an insight into the temporal status of loaded skin. Despite the advances in technology, to date, the translation to clinical tools which are robust and cost effective has been limited. There is a need to adapt existing technologies and simulation platforms to enable patients, carers and clinicians to employ appropriate intervention strategies to minimise soft tissue damage.

    摘要:BackgroundProximal humerus fractures are the third most common in the human body but their management remains controversial. Open reduction and internal fixation with plates is one of the leading modes of operative treatment for these fractures. The development of technologies and techniques for these plates, during the recent decades, promise a bright future for their clinical use. A comprehensive review of in vitro biomechanical studies is needed for the comparison of plates’ mechanical performance and the testing methodologies. This will not only guide clinicians with plate selection but also with the design of future in vitro biomechanical studies. This review was aimed to systematically categorise and review the in vitro biomechanical studies of these plates based on their protocols and discuss their results. The technologies and techniques investigated in these studies were categorised and compared to reach a census where possible.
