This paper discusses differences between communication protocol and IEC 61850 standard with an introduction of the IEC 61850 communication system and its characteristics; and systematically analyzes the network topology of IEC 61850 standard; and further explores the advantages as well as the challenges of implementing IEC 61850 communication capacity.
