The pineal gland secrets melatonin, which has an important influence on human's biological clock,reproduction,and antioxidation. The efforts of melatonin on hy-pothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis are inhibitory in overall, but it still has a protective effort to ovary, through scavenging free radicals,antioxidant effect,and inhibiting apoptosis. Here is to make a review on the properties, biological functions,especially the effects on the ovary,of melatonin and its receptor.
