正Language, as the saying goes, is a mirror of the times. Metaphors, as an integral part of language, can retiect these changes in a most vivid and insightful way, endowing a period or an era with its most characteristic images. This is not surprising, as metaphor is a rather special kind of figure of speech. It is a device whereby human beings convert, as only human beings can, abstract ideas and concepts into concrete shapes, making the new and unfamiliar familiar and comprehensible to the public mind.
